RECREATE LINDY SQUARED & OTHER MURALS ON BUILDINGS TO ENCOURAGE PUBLIC ART: $25,000

by MarkL 12.03.12

From 1977 to 1981 the much-loved Lindy Squared mural became a tourist stop, a landmark and a source of pride for the people of St. Louis. Though the building came down in 1981, the vision of recreating Lindy Squared has remained alive in many people’s hearts and minds. We now have an opportunity to not only recreate Lindy Squared in an innovative fashion, but to also initiate a mural renaissance in downtown St. Louis. Our dream, after recreating Lindy Squared, is to have painted murals that are artistically creative and inspiring on other buildings. These murals will give a positive message that promotes St. Louis. This would require a careful selection of locations suitable for the murals as well as a choice of subject matter that is compatible with, enhances and beautifies the surrounding architecture and street scape. The “Lindy Squared 2.0” mural will be hand-painted on a movable backing, so it can “travel.” It will be installed in four different locations over a two-year period. With strategic placement, a theme of “Where’s Lindy Now?” would allow for ongoing chatter about public art and events or developments in the region. It will also help to showcase a variety of neighborhoods. A larger initiative has a longer life - to use murals to help perpetuate the art community in St. Louis, and ultimately spawn more outdoor art that can be viewed for free (which is the nature of public art). Murals are a great medium to showcase the talents of local artisans and be a catalyst that promotes St. Louis as a great place to live, work, play, and visit. Using creative ideas, technology and a public forum, the initiative will be fun, engaging and an enticing attraction to people of all ages and from all walks of life. Building regional and even national awareness of St. Louis as a center for art will support tourism, artists and art-lovers, and enhance the stature of St. Louis as a world-class city. There are a number of other cities that have recognized the value of a vibrant visual environment, with murals playing a key roll. The Philadelphia Mural Arts Program is by far the largest in the U.S., perhaps the world, with over 3,000 murals in their collection. Surely, St. Louis would benefit in many ways from having more public art.

Extreme Makeover - UnderPass Edition: Budget $15,000

by JmciverSTL 12.05.12

The city of St. Louis is riddled with uninviting, dangerous underpasses created by the massive highways system that pierces through our city. Since the highways aren't going anywhere (unless the raised section of 70 downtown is removed, hopefully), an effort should be made to light up, beautify, and enliven the underpasses using state-of-the-art aesthetic lighting, art installations, unique programming, and other creative ideas to better link the sides divided by the highways and create a safer, more inviting pedestrian experience.

Washington Park Cemetery: Budget is $35,000 for Phase I.

by greenidchris 01.04.13

My husband & I are currently working to restore Washington Park Cemetery in Berkley. The cemetery is right next to the airport. The cemetery has been neglected since the mid 80's. There is a lot of overgrowth, trees, grass, & head stones that have been knock off of there base. My husband & I got involved with this project back in October when a child's remains were exposed in the cemetery. With help from our friends in the funeral industry we removed the young boy's remains from his original place of rest and had them interred. We are looking for volunteers to help us restore this cemetery to a peaceful & respectful place for the deceased & their families. The property lies on 40+ acres & as of right now we have 15 acres cleared. When people fly into or out of St. Louis the cemetery is in clear view for visitors or residents of St. Louis to see. It would be nice when people are flying in or out of St. Louis that they would see a cemetery that has been well maintained instead of years of neglect. This cemetery is the 2nd oldest African-American cemetery in St. Louis & its the largest African-American cemetery in St. Louis. Please help us restore this cemetery. The way people treat their dead tells a lot about a community.

Bring a Magic House installation to Lambert Airport! St. Louis is known for being a family-friendly place – so an exhibit or special installation from the Magic House St. Louis Children's Museum would be great for visitors, as Lambert Airport is the first impression of St. Louis for hundreds of thousands of travelers each year.

Lighting the MacArthur Bridge: Budget $1,595,000

by Dennis McGrath 01.07.13

Building on the momentum of high profile projects at the riverfront is compelling. Like the new I-70 bridge, and the transformation underway at the Arch grounds with CityArchRiver|2015, my proposal Lighting the MacArthur Bridge adds instant appeal to existing context, and creates a bold image at the south end of the riverfront.
